But albums like Cold Vein are especial for a different reason. I feel like Cold Vein can stand alone in a vacuum of time. Nothing at the time sounded like it, and nothing sounds like it now. The Cold Vein is the debut album by American hip hop duo Cannibal Ox. It was produced by El-P and released on his Definitive Jux label on May 15, 2001. The album has since been reissued by iHipHop Distribution. Every Wednesday we will discuss an album from our. Beginning with our list, we'll be moving chronologically to times. Last week's EAOTW: Album: - (Definitive Jux) Stream Songs Background/Description(courtesy of ) While it can be said that many underground crews have been floundering in the gray matter of indie hip-hop, Cannibal Ox filled that area in with 2001's The Cold Vein for El P's Def Jux imprint.
The music press had been quick to point out that Vast Aire and Vordul Megilah's attack is at times highly derivative of the Wu Tang Clan, and the point is valid. Thankfully, El P (a serious candidate for producer of the year) lays out some of the most lushly intriguing sounds and beats that feel as herky-jerky as they sound gilded with silk.
It's a bit misleading to harp on the Wu factor that The Cold Vein contains since this record's content is immensely original and the Wu references that seem present are in the enlightened gloomy flow and psychedelic backdrops - not, (with all due respect) in the kitschy hooks and unfocused rhymes that Wu Tang are also known for. Aire and Megilah swirl around in b-boy posturing and obtuse nonsense as their innovation rears its head at every corner with scatter-shot lines like: 'And I ain't dealin' with no minimum wage/I'd rather construct rhymes on a minimum page,' and 'You were a still-born baby, your mother didn't want you but you were still-born.' While there's not a throwaway track per se, the album's length does run a bit long (at least they didn't make it into a double CD as a lot of rap acts have been known to do). To their immense credit, Cannibal Ox and El P have assembled one of the most listenable hip-hop albums in far too long. Headz be aware: Independent hip-hop has a new voice and this is your beat fix for 2001. Guidelines This is an open thread for you to share your thoughts on the album. Avoid vague statements of praise or criticism.
This is your chance to practice being a critic. It's fine for you to drop by just to say you love the album, but let's try and step it up a bit!!! How has this album affected hip-hop? WHY do you like this tape? What are the best tracks? Do you think it deserves the praise it gets? Is it the first time you've listened to it?
What's your first impression? Have you listened to the artist before? Explain why you like it or why you don't. DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT BEING LATE!!!! Discussion throughout the week is encouraged. The first five tracks on this thing is one of the best runs of straight fire that I can think of. Just five really hard songs.
Also a lot of quotables 'If there's crack in a basement, crack heads stand adjacent' always sticks out to me. Pigeon is also one of my favourite hip-hop songs of all time, El-P talks about that song in his Red Bull academy lecture. He says it's about how pigeons are dirty ass birds but they still posses the incredible gift of flight and that's analogous to Can O who are these trod on ghetto kids with an incredible gift for rhyming. Amazing album. Sorry if this sounds like I'm being voyeuristic but the feeling I get from listening to it only really matched by the of watching Oz or reading Iceberg Slim. It's not just 'gritty'. Somehow the more cinematic and lush El's production gets the better it paradoxically seems to create a picture of life unflinchingly realistic and mildly fear-inducing; like watching a handycam tour of a housing project in the dead of winter.
I've never heard anything so dissonant but so addictive to listen to. As for the rapping, Vast Aire and Vordul Mega excel at that kind of 'rapping out of the pocket' style of not keeping in time and instead creating their own separate off-kilter rhythms that shift in and out of an almost talking pace (a la 36 Chambers, EL-P, some early Jay-Z. See for more of a description). It creates a kind of rhythmic dissonance that not only reinforces how hard the beats knock but perfectly matches how Vast Aire and Vordul Mega's descriptions just sound so especially vivid and believable. It's such an underused technique. Definitely check out if you felt Run the Jewels feels like it lacks depth sometimes, or wonder what it would be like if Wu Tang/RZA progressed more in the mould of 36 Chambers. Great timing with the new Can Ox LP coming out later next month!
El-P's production is absolutely fantastic on this LP as he felt he had something to prove, following his split with Company Flow. His experimental, yet refined production carries whomever is rhyming on his beats into extremely adventurous heights and landscapes, and not slowing down for any MC's unwilling to keep up. In this regard, the album was bound to be in classic territory. The beats are purposefully abrasive, but also accessible enough as to tease you into them, but refuse to open up to you. The unorthodox drum patterns and sci-fi style beats create the aesthetic of an early TRON movie, it's fantastic although my gripe is that a few tracks I find a little corny (The opening track isn't a fantastic rap beat in my opinion) but from the skittering percussion on Raspberry Fields to the fucking DISGUSTING sample on Stress Rap, it's way ahead of its time, in true El-P fashion. What else sounded remotely similar in 2001? Lyrics are a mixed bag, but something that does intrigue me.
Vast Aire's lethargic flow emphasizes his lyrics which, even still, will continue to fly proudly over most listeners heads. He also has a really cool method of repeating the last bar of a verse, which he does several times during the album, to really ingrain it into your head, and this works! His lyrics really do stick in your head and it's hard not to rap a long. This is a gift and a curse however, as it also emphasizes the bad lyrics, and some lyrics will even just leave your head scratching, such as the opening lines on B-Boy Alpha My mother said, 'You sucked my pussy when you came out His partner in crime, Vordul Mega, is a little more traditional but in a sense pales in originality points compared to his ally on the mic.
His raps are by no means sub par, but the way he delivers them feels a little too close to home over such abstract beats. On tracks such as The F Word, his appearance feels utterly pointless. The silver lining to this is, in a similar fashion to ATCQ, it stops one MC getting carried away if one attempts to push themselves a little too 'out there', in this case, Vordul Mega keeps Vast Aire back on planet earth. It's a shame there was never a fully El-P produced follow up, but their beef is fun to read up on and definitely justified in my opinion (Vast Aire is an asshole).
I used to really really love this album. I think at one point it was top 5 albums of all time for me.
The beats were next level, and the lyricism was deep, songs like Iron Galaxy and Pigeon painted a really vivid picture of struggling in the hood. I always remember imagining videos for songs off the album, and visualising the projects of New York covered in snow. I remember watching that Def Jux mini documentary too, and seeing El-P's shit studio in like his bedroom or something, and it just adds to the aura of this album of one produced by normal guys living far from pretty in a shit part of town, unhappy with whats around them. And I think that is reflected in the music Can't say the album has aged well for me though, I rarely listen to songs off it nowadays. I'd still say it is a very good album, for sentimental reasons, but I can't imagine if it was my first time listening to it now I would share the same sentiment.
I think it really appealed to a younger me: Vast Aire uses a lot of similes and metaphors that I thought were super deep at a younger age (stuff like New York being a rotten apple, being a pigeon in the hood and hustling for food, etc.), but now don't have that same emotive effect. The beats are still really good though, and it's a very cohesive project: El-P (who, come on, was essentially the de facto 3rd member), Vast Aire and Vordul all come together very well. In fact, I think when you listen to their solo stuff, you really get a good idea of their synergy (eurgh hate that word) on this album. Vast Aire and Vordul's solo albums are not nearly as good, and I remember being super disappointed when I listened to them, but in hindsight it's just a testament to how well the three came together for this project. The best songs for me were always Iron Galaxy, Atom, Raspberry Fields (urgh that beat), Vein & Pigeon.
